Davidson / Murley / Braid Quintet
The Davidson/Murley/
Braid Quintet (DMBQ) is a
collaboration between Juno
Award winners Mike Murley
on saxophone, David Braid
on piano and emerging artist,
saxophonist Tara Davidson.
Rounding out this stellar group
of Canada’s finest are Jim
Vivian on bass and New York’s
Ian Froman on drums.
The music of DMBQ is intelligently
sophisticated while
remaining accessible and firmly rooted in the tradition of swing-driven jazz. The writing
is conducive to launching these exceptional young players into improvisations that reflect
contemporary sensibilities and attitudes without sacrificing the beauty of a melodic line or
the strong lilt of a swing-based phrase.
After being voted jazz ensemble of the year at the Canadian National Jazz Awards in
2006, the Murley/Braid Quartet asked Terra Davidson to join them as a special guest on a
Canadian tour. They ended the tour with a recording date, and the result was the formation
of the Davidson/Murley/Braid Quintet.
With all three co-leaders involved as writers, this is an exciting opportunity to hear not
only this generation’s finest players, but also the kind of new material that is coming out of
the most creative minds in the country.
Medicine Hat audiences are well acquainted with both Mike Murley and David Braid
from past appearances in our city. This return visit with DMBQ will be one of those late
night series gems that make JazzFest what it is!
