People are relaxing with a glass of wine and the glow of a candle. On stage is a serious jazz band. They’re playing their own charts. Digging in. Pushing the boundaries of the music. The audience responds. The band kicks it up a notch. It’s like nothing you’ve ever heard before. That is the late night series at JazzFest. Every night of the festival. Right here in your own city. We bring a taste of New York – of Montreal. Those corners of the world, tucked away where magic happens. New charts written and played by the emerging artists – maybe the Wynton Marsalis’s of the future – maybe some jazz cats who have just decided their music is more important than marketing. Those who come say this is the heart of the JazzFest. The gold mine. Hand picked. Every one with its own texture – own flavor – own colour and charisma. But they find that each band shares a common commitment to the art – to jazz – to pushing the music into the future , while at the same time keeping at least one foot firmly grounded in the great jazz tradition carved out over the past 60-plus years. BUT – IT’S SO LATE! 10:30. That’s past my bed time!! That’s part of the experience. If you were in New York, would you be hitting the sack at 10:30?? NO! Not when life is happening. And this week, you’ve got New York in your back yard. The Esplanade Studio Theatre. We’re calling it The Studio Club. We set the room like a club – everyone is close to the band – the lights are low – you can enjoy a glass of wine or a beer. It’s all there – including a band on stage that may have just played New York – or the Upstairs Jazz Bar and Grill in Montreal. So come on in. Find a corner. You may just be amazed. Like pulling the cork on a bottle of wine. You’re never exactly sure what you’re going to get. But there aren’t many bad ones! The Studio Club. It’s the heart of JazzFest. It’s worth checking out. WHERE: The Studio Club (The Esplande Studio Theatre) Tuesday, June 24 – The Davidson/Murley/Braid Quintet from Toronto
