Since 1978 these four brothers
have been considered the
first family of Cajun blues
and New Orleans’ funk. With
vocalist Aaron, Art “Poppa
Funk” on keyboards, Charles
on sax and Cyril on percussion,
this tight knit family of
funk has been through thick
and thin together, but are still
carrying forward the music
that generations have come
to love. And while each has
carried on their own career as
soloists and members of other
bands, the coming together of
family has continued to be a
priority for these legends.
The source of their collective similarities is passionate funk, a feeling for blues-soaked deep
pocket grooves that is the basis of their greatness and exalted place in our cultural history.
The Nevilles have retained their global following with LPs like 1992’s Family Groove,
1994’s Live on Planet Earth, and 1996’s Mitakuye Oyasin Oyasin/All My Relations. The
Neville Brothers legacy continued in 1999 with Valence Street, named after the street on
which they were raised.
Yet after all these years, Charles says, “The older we’ve gotten, the more adamant we
are about forging our own production and focusing on songs that express our innermost
beliefs. The Nevilles continue to provoke, entertain and excite audiences around the globe.
The Neville Brothers’ appearance at the Medicine Hat JazzFest is the result of a co-promotion
effort between the JazzFest and the Esplanade, and comes in the middle of an extensive
tour of North America. This is a rare opportunity to hear one of the truly legendary
bands of the past 3 decades.
